Can Memory modules from a newer iMac be put in an older iMac?
I've got 2 8gb memory modules that came out of my iMac retina 5k, 27-inch 2017, can I put them in my wife's imac 27inch late 2012?

The 2012 iMac uses 204 pin modules
The 2017 iMac uses 260 pin modules
Plus the notches are in a different place, so that you can not screw up and fry your memory controller or modules.
Prior to Intel Macs, the old PowerPC Macs could often use faster RAM than was intended for them as long as it fit. Things got picky when the Intel processors were adopted in 2006.

Personally I always keep the stock modules, handy just incase the Mac has a problem and/or needs to go in for service.
