It depends upon what you do.

Note that an iPad is not just a smaller version of a computer. It runs very different software under a very different operating system and is more limited in what you can do. Despite Apple's trend of making iOS devices more mainstay they still require a computer at times, so to me an iPad is something you consider after you have purchased a computer, not instead of.
