I have a first generation iPad. The model number is MB294LL. Is it possible to add it to my device under iCloud? How do I obtain a recovery key so that I could backup the content in the iCloud and update the device to the latest OS?

There is no way a first generation iPad will even come close to updating to the latest iOS. The original iPad can't be updated beyond iOS 5.1 and the current is iOS 13. Read this article for what may be available:
