Launching files from my desktop

I have both files on my computer and iCloud files on my desktop and I can't open them from my desktop or the corresponding programme (preview, Word, Excel,Powerpoint). This started happening last week, when for a brief moment all my local and icloud files were not visible on my desktop. Does anyone have an idea how to solve this?

I appreciate your input and help with this issue.
