Right now while writing this there is a white square where the screenshot was suppose to have been taken and the rest of the screen faded. The screenshot never gets made and I have to restart to clear the problem. I would love to send a screenshot but uhhhhh....cant due to the program not re-opening.

When you get that white residual square after screen shot, just press the escape key to dismiss it, or on the left end of the Screen Shot panel, there is a circle-x — click that.
Before you capture a Screen Shot, click on its Options menu and choose the destination of the capture. Typically, this is the Desktop.

Nope. It is set to Desktop and there is no circle with an X. Once I hit return to capture the screen, the program crashes and I am stuck in the dark except the capture part. Esc key does nothing. There is no program open to escape even from. I also cant re-open the program.
I will try making a new user I guess

I have never had this issue with Catalina, and therefore can't duplicate your issue. Have you tried signing on as another user?
oooohhhh there is a circle with a little square in the title bar. It didn't used to require that.
