ios 13.2 deleting podcasts randomly

I recently upgraded to iOS 13.2 on my iPhone XS. Since then, my phone has deleted 1200 podcast episodes four separate times. These are podcast episodes I loaded onto my phone myself, not podcasts that I am subscribed to through iTunes. None of these episodes had been played. Twice it happened while I was listening to a podcast. Suddenly the podcasts just stopped playing and the episodes were gone. When I connected my phone to my MacBook, the episodes automatically re-synced to my phone since they were unplayed. My podcast settings have not been changed between iOS13.1 and 13.2 (or for years for that matter) -- they are set to auto delete off my phone once played, but again none of these have been played.

Seems like this is a bug in iOS 13.2. Has anyone else experienced this? Since I don't lose the files, it is more of an annoyance than anything to have to re-sync with my MacBook, but it is annoying nonetheless. Just another of the many bugs I continue to find with Apple products.

I just wanted to update with my experience of switching podcasts over to audiobooks in an attempt to bypass these deletion problem.

I am running Mojave on a MacBook Air with the good version of iTunes before Apple destroyed it (and podcasts) in Catalina.

I converted all of my podcasts that were not part of an RSS feed over to audiobooks and play them through the Books app. I was able to edit the metadata as needed to get the files in the order I wanted and everything has worked perfectly. I am able to play them back at the speed I want, unlike being stuck with normal speed if they were classified as music. None of my files have deleted, and I am still able to use the podcast app for any podcasts I listen to that download through RSS feeds straight to my phone. I no longer worry about syncing podcasts with my MacBook Air.

The main reason I did not switch to Catalina when it first came out was because Apple destroyed the podcast functionality. You could no longer import your own audio files into Podcasts, and you cannot import files into Music and then change their classification to podcast to backdoor the files into the podcast app.

Once I figured out audiobooks is a good workaround, I decided today to upgrade from Mojave to Catalina. Mistake. Apple also destroyed the functionality of Books on the Mac. Now if you have an audiobook, you cannot see the chapter names in Books on the computer. All you see is the title of the audiobook and the length, and you cannot edit the metadata at all. So if you import your own files into Books, you will not be able to edit the metadata to make sure they are named right, in the right order, etc.

So I have downgraded back to Mojave and plan to stick here until Apple's developers decide to stop breaking things and trying to be so creative and "smart" that they forget about the end user.

If anyone has any workarounds to any of the problems I mention above in Catalina that I may be missing, please let me know.

I am having the same problem! I am glad I found this thread because it's happening to me to and it makes me very angry. I am going to have to try and spot the exact moment when it happens because it's not always obvious at the time.

Sometimes I immediately know when the episodes disappear but recently everything seemed to be fine until I went to listen and ... gone.

Yes I still have the same problem on 13.4.1. I spoke to a tech back in February who promised he would stay on top of it and keep me informed. Suffice to say I have heard nothing back since despite my attempted follow up. Apple obviously doesn’t care. My kingdom for a return of Steve Jobs because the company has been declining ever since.

They way to get the company's attention is to vote with your feet. I got a 5th Gen iPod touch (iPod5,1). CPU is a little slow but, after a 30 USD battery replacement, it works like a champ. Best is that it maxes out at iOS 9.3.5 so, no upgrade issues. I brought this up earlier in the thread. The reason I mention it again here is that what I have noticed is that I have begun to leave my iPhone at home when I go out now. That is, unless I know I need to have my phone, either for maps or for the phone itself, I don't bring it. The iPod itself I leave in airplane mode and only sync by USB. I am back living in some mix of the 1990s, when we all used to walk around without any chain to the Internet or even a phone, and the 2000s, when iPods worked mostly like they were supposed to. It is wonderful. I expect it also terrifies Apple that users might opt for this experience over being engagement/data exhaust fumes.

All they need to do is reverse whatever they did in 13.2. It's working fine on 13.1.

I also found another issue. I downloaded my podcast to my itunes before synching them to my iPhone. Some of the recently downloaded & synched podcast episodes are asking for streaming instead to play properly. Urrghhh. This kind of defeat the purpose me downloading & synching the podcast.

That is what I did as well and it was easy. But if the metadata of the files aren't in great shape, things could be out of place or grouped in a strange manner. Example, one of my files had "part of a compilation" checked, but the others in the same grouping didn't, so it separated that one file out into a separate audiobook. I had to go back in and uncheck that so that it went back in with the rest of the same grouping. I think it just depends on the state of the files you are converting.

I’d forgotten that comment. But no, didn’t work :-( The phone thought it still had the files somewhere, I could tell by the available storage space. Turned it off and on again, and literally watched the used space recalc slowly downwards.

Giftenblue - can I listen to a book at 1.5 speed? And does iTunes know they’re played?Otherwise I’ll just live with my version of the workaround.
