After catalina update and shutting down, now MBP will not stay on in clamshell mode. When you close the lid it goes to sleep and doesn't even wake up for external mouse or kbd, or even when you open the lid - you have to touch the fingerprint reader to back on.

Correction - after opening the lid, now it will power mouse, kbd & ext. display. It allowed login from ext. kbd, and when I closed the lid it stayed on for a short while (no more than 30s?). I thought for a second that logging in from external kbd may have fixed it, but no.

AH HA! Fixed it. The macbook is on a different power strip from ext. display. So although it was plugged in like normal, it was actually running on battery. After resetting the power strip, now it's working as expected.
