Good afternoon j25hanes,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand you are trying to connect an external microphone to your iPhone XR running iOS 13. The Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter is meant for connecting headphones to your iPhone. What external microphone are you trying to connect to the iPhone using this adapter? Try the following steps to make the connection:

  • If the Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter is connected to your iPhone, disconnect it.
  • Plug the third party microphone into the Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter first.
  • Then plug the Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter into your iPhone.

If the microphone you are using is not working with your iPhone, there are several models listed in the Apple Store.

I've filtered the models that state they are compatible with with iPhone XR here for you - Apple Store - Accessories - Microphones

Take care.
