Logic Pro X - input monitoring during playback

Title says it all - I can hear input monitoring if nothing is playing - but, if I press the play button then the input monitor is shut off (even though the little "I" button is colored/on/engaged). If I record the input monitoring works as expected. If not playing back tracks input monitoring is on. But, input monitoring is off during playback. I just want to rehearse a bit before I record - can't hear anything because input monitoring is mysteriously shut off during playback.

Yeah, anyway, how do you keep input monitoring on during playback? (if that's possible)
