Your disk is almost full message

For the past few days the above message has been repeatedly popping up on my desktop. How do I stop it appearing please?

How to fix "Your disk is almost full"? This warning keeps popping up even though I have 990MB available (quick look at HD shows 1.22GB?). The amount of free space keeps changing even though I’m not adding any files. iTunes is on external disk. This is on a mid-2010 Mac Pro running Sierra 10.12.6, 24GB RAM. Any advice is appreciated.

My disk utility totals don't match hard drive totals My disk utility shows 157Gb but I only have 95Gb worth of files. Is it a virus? Macbook Pro 2012 running El Capital (10.11.6)

My hard drive frequently gets almost full up and I frequently transfer data to external drives. That is not the problem as I have tried to explain. The problem is stopping the message from constantly appearing on my desk top. It has only started doing this recently and I want to shut it down as I don’t need reminding every five minutes.

I don’t want to know how to free up space, just how to get rid of the message as it is annoying.

Well, if it is reporting correctly a lack of free space can cripple your disk and once it's full there's little you can do.
