During setup I put my fingerprint in, however I do not recall putting in a pin

In order to use the touch id, a passcode must be created.
if you don't remember you need to factory reset the ipad follow instructions here If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support
