Which AppleCare warranty version?
The standard, free, one-year, limited AppleCare does NOT cover screen or user damage.
The paid two-year, extended AppleCare+ warranty covers accidental/incidental damage, like screen damage, for a small; $49 U.S.D. iPad repair/replacement fee.
Without this paid, extended, two-year warranty, the costs for a replacement iPad will be much more expensive.
