Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?
Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

Sorry late reply. Yes, it was the blue tooth that stopped. I have restarted the Mac 2 or 3 times after it started to perform very slow. At the moment bluetooth seems to be fine. I will report if it stops again. Thanks for your support

You mean Bluetooth quit again?
Have you blown the dust out of the intakes lately?
What temperatures does this App report?
This App can be used to speed up the fans, all my iMacs would be dead without it.
Never ever ever drop fan speeds below the speed that the Mac itself is calling for.

Thank you very much, unfortunately it worked for a while after I logged in on safe mode but then stopped working. My computer became very slow now that I am back in normal mode though. What can I do now? Is this (bluetooth) a software or hardware problem?
Thank you very much! I will try this right away and let you know if it did work
Just tried it, since the bluetooth option is complete dead nothing is happening with the shift+option keys. I am using my keyboard and mouse directly connected to Mac with wire.
OK, good luck.
