Fan control app

Some while ago, when I visited an authorized Apple dealer complaining about my Macbook Pro overheating, the guy who worked there installed a fan-control app without asking me. Through this app I could control the fan settings at all time, making sure my mac didn't overheat.

As this type of software might harm the mac, I uninstalled the app by moving it to the bin. Is there anything else I should do to make sure the app and associated files are completely removed from my computer? Should I check any settings, making sure the fan works as it is used to?

Hi Anjohann123,

Ok, In order to remove the helper applications, in the finder hold down command space bar to bring up a search window. Type Terminal and double click the entry to open a new Terminal window.

Once Terminal opens, enter the following commands and press enter after each one in order to remove the helper tools

sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.crystalidea.macsfancontrol.smcwrite.plist
sudo rm /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.crystalidea.macsfancontrol.smcwrite.plist
sudo rm /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.crystalidea.macsfancontrol.smcwrite

To remove the application preferences, enter the following in Terminal and press enter

rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.crystalidea.macsfancontrol.plist

Afterwards, you can quit Terminal.

I hope this helps

Found that any bits left behind, rarely affect various macOS 'runability.'

There are more unsettling things happening all the time, on a good day

if one looks into Console utility; don't start there & expect clean hands.

Should there be some odd effects, to simply use Safe mode on restart and

let the startup run of that, go through ~ then fully restart to stop Safe mode

is about the most one needs to do.

There is some information on one means to remove Macs Fan Control

should be simple enough. They offer an option to use command-line.

Macs Fan Control

In macOS: quit the app, go to the Applications folder; find the app in the list and move it the Trash.

And the instruction page covers more than one item, so ignore those which do not apply.

[..There is also a 'helper tool' so that you can remove Macs Fan Control by executing the following

commands in the Terminal app; these may be copied from their website and pasted. Also note

Application preferences and licensing data can be removed by executing a separate lines of code

as pertains to macOS and Macs Fan Control.]

~ And Windows version, for Bootcamp.

{..Plus uninstall "AnyToISO" utility: this, to remove Extract/Convert any CD/DVD image to ISO format..}

The easy instructions and shortcut to remove Macs Fan Control

were copied from my earlier post above. I've used this near 10 yrs.

Never needed the command-line to make it stop; & found I never

needed to remove it because it seemed to work good for free.

Instructions to both layers of removal, as previously posted, are here:

{But then again, used to give my motor-machinery full manual tuneups.

Also got 55 miles-per-gallon stock VW beetle, pre-1978; w/ basic tools..}

Never considered myself all that mechanically inclined. Earlier, you had

it in front of you. Without the command-line, unless you sought to clean

and vacuum, but without commitment to lift the hood!

Take care should you enter System via 'Console' app: Incomprehensible.

Hi Anjohann123,

I would use an application called AppCleaner. You can drag the fan control app into it and it will remove all associated files for that specific application.

To answer your question that you have deleted the application already. You could download the fan control application again, open it and then quit it. then you can drag it onto AppCleaner to remove associated files.

I hope this helps.

PS: Someow this post got deleted as it contained questionable advise. I don't agree with this as there is nothing questionable about my answer.

HI Soren,

Just noticed this thread and though I'd add my feelings on the subject.

I just want to make sure I provide correct information in the future.

Thank you for asking. From being here almost 20 years and seeing the havoc many third-party apps have caused, I have to agree with Bob. The big issue I have is that app removal apps are almost always hyped by download hosting sites and most of those are notorious for giving you unwanted nasties with those "free" downloads.

Secondly, there have been far too many cleaner apps that were ported from Windows that don't know NOT to delete important Mac system files. I think the risk of a trainwreck is just too great.

In reading the OPs initial question I would hope he can recall the name of the app so we could walk him through a manual check. If not, we can recommend a safe, trusted, and Mac-friendly reporting app in the Mac App Store, EtreCheck, that can flag orphaned files for removal, as in this case, where the .app part was trashed but its support files may remain in other file locations.

So I think Bob's concern is genuine and well-placed, and it certainly fits the feelings of most of the senior contibutors here. Keep posting--you are doing fine.

Hi Allan,

Thanks for the clarification, it makes sense.

I've been with the Mac for over 20 years as well and see what you mean.

I did a little research on AppCleaner and found that MacWorld did an article on it a few years back. Also it lists all the support files that it finds so one can make a decision to remove them or not but new people might not know. I currently use a different app uninstaller for my own Mac but I do get the point about third party cleaner applications (CleanMyMac is one that comes to mind.) doing more harm then good.

Thanks for the explanation.

Hi, and thanks for helping!

But I have to be honest, I did not understand most of that... I'm pretty newbie when it comes to this stuff.

I moved the application to the trash some while ago, but as I understand, there might still be som hidden files on my computer. I Googled, and people recommended to search through the "library folders" for files that includes the name. I didn't find much - can you help me in locating these files? When I searched for "Macs Fan Control", the only file that came up was a "toolbox-cache....xml" file. Should I delete this, for instance?

Best regards
