Apple ID

I just got a new phone and it is asking for the password to an Apple ID account that I no longer have access to. The phone also will not let me change the account to another Apple ID account I have already created. What do I do since I cannot get any apps or anything to download until I do? Thanks.

If you restored the new iPhone from a backup, or are trying to transfer data from an old iPhone through the direct migration it will ask for any Apple Id that exists in the old iPhone in any way.

Normally that happens when you have apps that were downloaded with the old Apple ID on the old iPhone and they are trying to be restored.

Note, that unless manualyl deleted though Apple's vfery specific Apple ID deletion process, Apple IDs never stop functioning even if the associated email address is no longer functional.

If you don't know the password for it anymore, you will need to attempt to recover it, though without a functional email, it may be impossible to get the recovery email.

A truly new phone should not be asking you for a password to any old account you have used. It should be content with whatever you type into it. Is this truly a brand new phone, or is it just new to you? If it is a new-to-you but secondhand phone it could be asking for the account for the previous owner and then you may encounter serious difficulty.

Find My iPhone Activation Lock - This is a security feature, in part to deter re-selling of stolen devices. --> http://support.apple.com/HT201365

Turn off Activation Lock --> https://support.apple.com/HT201441 - An activation lock can only be removed using the log-in information for the account that applied the lock.

If this is a device for which you are not the original owner, get the owner of the account to remove the lock or return the device for a refund. The device is otherwise useless to you. If the owner has not provided contact information as a message showing in the login screen there is no way to contact the owner unless the person who gave you the device knows them.
