Can't delete phantom podcast series from iPhone

I've managed to avoid this bug for a long time but it's finally bitten me again

If you have a podcast series where the episodes are removed from the RSS feed and you don't have any downloaded then although you can delete the series from within the podcast app on the phone .... when you connect the phone via bluetooth (or cable) to a car the entry still appears and I cannot get rid of it

The only solution I have found is to wipe the iPhone and install everything from scratch (NOT a backup) and I just don't want to do that right now as it will take too long.

Has anyone found the solution to the long running bug of phantom podcast series over bluetooth which is a development of the old physical cable "iPod" interface if that is the correct term
