Wife’s iphone 7 sends iMessage to iPad when replying to a text message from a non apple device.

How can this be? Surely it should simply respond to the device the message originated from. Text to text or iMessage to iMessage.

Maybe I was not clear. A text was received from an Android phone. The reply went from my wife’s iPhone to the senders iPad via iMessage and not to the android phone. Also all of her messages are now jumbled together rather than in 2 separate files i.e iMessage in one place and texts in another.

It sounds like the user who sent the text was in your wife's Contacts, and if that is there is a way for the response to be sent via iMessage (e.g. the user has an email address that works for iMessage in Contacts along with a phone number that just works for SMS), that route will be preferred for the response.

If the user has no contact information or only an SMS-capable number, the response will be sent via SMS.
