I recently updated my Mac Book Air to Catalina 10.15. Now I can't access my word and excel programs. What are my options? Thank you!

You need to upgrade your Office program. You can update to Office 365 or Office 2018:

Or you can try the free Libre Office:
I am not able to even open the word and excel program on my computer now. Do I need to delete that program before I install Microsoft Office365? If I understand the instructions that I see, it says to open your documents and click "update". Thanks for any help you can offer.
I'm sorry, I'm on my computer every single day for hours but I'm not tech savvy. If I delete the old Office programs, will my files (word and excel mostly) be deleted as well? Should I uninstall my current Office program after i load the new one? Thank you so much for you help and your patience.
Thank you for your help!
No, you don't need to delete the old programs but since they are not doing you any good and its possible Office could get confused, I'd delete them.
No, deleting the old apps will not affect your files (that said, you should always have a backup). Uninstall your old Office programs whenever you like.
You're welcome.
