I can't seem to figure out Apple TV are there any tv shows or series that can be watched or do I need to subscribe to something before I see anything through appletv, if so I guess I'm missing the point of what the monthly fee for Apple TV is? It seems like only 5 shows and those are geared towards kids

That service entitles you to Apple original content, currently there are 10 series and 2 movies, with more added each month. When you select the Apple TV + icon it will show you exactly what is included within that service.
If you bought a new device and claimed the offer then it would free for 12 months, after which it would be the $4.99
It does not entitle you to any other content within the TV app. There are other Apple TV channels, which require separate subscriptions, and content from the iTunes store (which is done through rental or purchase). Those are also marked, and requires confirmation before said subscription, rental or purchase is activated.

Those services have a back catalogue of licensed content from other providers on top of any original shows, whereas Apple TV + consists of original content only. It also costs less then competing services for that reason, however if one is able to claim the free year then there is nothing to lose.
Also worth noting that when Netflix started it didn't really have much content either, and barely any originals.

If you are referring to AppleTV+, www.apple.com/apple-tv-plus shows the shows that are available as part of an AppleTV+ subscription.
Apple TV + is $4.99 a month for all the Apple TV + content which admittedly is not very much right now. However, Apple is releasing more and is committed to providing more content.
If you are referring to the Apple TV app, plan on subscriptions to the content you want to watch. The advantage of Apple TV is you just watch what you want and you have your content in 1 place . Free tv is a thing of the long distant past unless you put up an antenna on your roof and get HD content that is available over the air in your area.
This was a very helpful reply, and I had the same question. $4.95 a month may not sound like a lot, but it all adds up. After signing up for Apple TV+, I was expecting it to be akin to Showtime, Netflix, Hulu, etc.-- and for it to provide a significant amount of content, but I'm just not seeing that. I don't see the value here at this time.

Okay so the maybe 6 shows that show is all that are included? I guess I was expecting a little more from the Apple TV app, I was thinking it was more like a Netflix where you pay a flat subscription fee and there are lots of programs to chose from. Instead of if you want to watch something you have to pay additional fees, which is what this app appears to be. Thank you

To watch Elf it is $10.00 on Apple TV. To watch anywhere else about everyday and about on any channel you want this time of year, FREE.

Hi - I am finding the conversation on this thread rather confusing and I can not see a concise answer to the simple question? I recently purchased a new iPhone and that came with a free 12 months subscription to Apple TV+. From the advertising, one could assume that all the content that you can navigate to via your Apple TV+ App is included? However this is unclear, as I note that after watching a couple of old TV episodes, I have been charged.
Even if I was paying the $4.99 per month, what is included for that and what is charged?
Not really one place when there are subscriptions i.e. Netflix that aren't part of the Apple TV app.....

Also, unless those channels were being viewed over an antenna then it wouldn't exactly be free.
Assuming I am paying $$ for Apple Tv then this would be an additional cost that is not charged when paying Comcast, DirectTv or Dish for their subscriptions.
I can record Elf on a DVR and essentially own it without further cost.
Granted that each of these other services have a pay to watch system as well. But Elf, c'mon.
