How do I delete, not just remove, photos from in a Mac Library album?

If you want to get rid of photos from Library, but not an album, can you delete and sell have the photo in the album? Once I put a photo in an album, can I delete it from the library, without it being deleted from the album?I have a Mac Pro lap top.
