iPod Classic lost all music and will not sync from Finder

See What happened to iTunes? - Apple Support for details of the changes in Catalina. Syncing to your device would be managed through Finder now. My experience is that Catalina doesn't play nicely with Windows formatted iPods, so I had to restore my classic before I could get Catalina to copy music to it.

Have tried to make sense of this paper and follow recommendations. Feel I could be making matters worse as the music is on my MacBook but NOT on my iPod classic. I want to sync it from the MacBook to the iPod but it does not recognise the Music content. Is this connected to Catalina?

iPod Classic will only copy photos after restoring settings several times. Have copied older file from May 2019 but it doesn't find it when I press Sync. Goes round for brief time then stops and stays empty of music.
