Counterfeit MacBook MagSafe Charger - how to identify?

Is there any way to tell if an Apple accessory is a counterfeit from the outside packaging?

I bought a magsafe charger for my MacBook Pro last year from a reputable Apple dealer. NOT the Apple Store because we don't have one here on Maui. I had no reason to believe it wasn't the real thing until 3 days ago when the adapter's connector to the MacBook power socket overheated. I was pulling the charger out of my Mac and received second degree burns on my thumb and forefinger. Big brands like Disney and handbag designers regularly inspect retailers for counterfeits, but it doesn't seem like Apple does this. It was a certified Apple retailer, so buyer beware! I ran the issue through Apple and they won't back it up because it's a counterfeit, so I'm screwed. I think the message Apple is sending is to only buy online or at an Apple Store, and they won't backup purchases at authorized retailers.

That is awful! I hope you are recovering Ok.

I'm not sure how well you can identify a fake if it is still within the packaging except if the charger is lighter than your original charger. Here is an article with tips on identifying fake Magsafe chargers:

You can also report the vendor to Apple to see if Apple might investigate them. It would probably help if you have a receipt showing proof of purchasing the adapter from the vendor.

I feel bad you got ripped off and even worse you had three degree burns....ouch !

Well I bought mine from Apple so I am quite sure it is the real deal, but I will compare mine to yours to see the difference between a real one and a fake.

Can you tell me why you needed a new one. Can you also explain this...... you said "I was pulling the charger out of my Mac" do you usually have to pull on it to remove it ?

I look forward to your reply.
