messages constantly marked as unread

I recently upgraded from a 6S to an 11. Since updating, I have had messages disappear after reading but mainly the frustration is the inability for the phone to recognise when I have read the messages. I definitely don’t have 30 unread messages. Have tried switching iMessages off and restarting the phone. When I restart it states no messages but as soon as I put on iMessage again the 30 messages appear again.

Hi there, Scottish_Jane.

Congratulations on the upgrade!

I see that the badge icon for the Messages application on your iPhone keeps showing that there's 30 unread messages. The problem is, they've all been read, and I'm glad to help.

Filter, block, and delete messages on iPhone -- Open Messages and see if there's any messages unread in the Unknown & Junk tab. You can read about this setting under "Filter iMessage messages from unknown sender".

Use notifications on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch -- If there weren't any unread messages being filtered, turn off Notifications for the Messages application, then restart your iPhone: Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Once you're back to the Home screen, turn Notifications back on, and see if the badge icon has cleared.

Let me know how that goes, and take care!
