Non iMessage Texts are showing unread on iPad

I’m just now having this problem, since the last update. Never happened before now. I have an iPhone 12Pro. I’ll read my messages there and when I open my iPad only iMessages show as read and all others are still pending. Did they ever find a fix or is it just now happening again?

This is soo annoying having to go through hundreds of texts to clear out.

All my devices have the latest updates and iMessage settings in place.
