BACKUP of MACBOOK PRO to SSD EXTERNAL DEVICE

I want to use an external device to back up my MacBookPro. I need your advice if I should use an SSD or a regular disk device. I incline for an SSD.

What manufacturer do you recommend and support?

Does Time machine support and SSD device?

I need to make backups at random time intervals. Most of teh time the external device is disconnected an dlocked. I connect it when I decide to make a back up. Can Time Machine do that?

Thank you!!!!

I use a G-Drive SSD to backup my 2016 MacBook Pro. See: https://www.amazon.com/G-Technology-0G06053-G-Drive-Portable-Storage/dp/B0765PBZNL?th=1

It works perfectly with both Time Machine and Carbon Copy Cloner (using 2 partitions on the SSD). I connect the drive to my Mac once a week and Time Machine automatically updates it when it connects.
