Play/Pause and Fast Forward/Rewind buttons not workin

Quite often I notice that the play, pause, fast forward and rewind buttons (F7, F8 and F9) stop working. They won't work for anything whether it's iTunes or Chrome or Safari. I've done multiple resets on my laptop and it works for a little while but they eventually stop working again. I've got a newer Macbook Air but this also happened on my Macbook Pro. Is it an update that has starting causing this? It never happened until one day I updated my Macbook Pro and it's continued through computers. I really don't want to have to restart my computer every time this happens if there's an easier fix.

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. I understand the keys on your Mac quit working after some time. I’ll be happy to help with this.


You’ve done a good job testing this and seeing that it happens across devices and through updates. To verify, does this happen in safe boot or a new user account as well? Test both to see:


Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac


If you press and hold the function key on your Mac (usually in the lower left corner) does the key work as expected?


Also, check System Preferences > Keyboard under the Keyboard tab that you have the correct keyboard selected there.
