I purchased my phone outright from cricket and have asked them for the unlock code. According to them I am in need of completing a 6 month service agreement with them in order for them to provide me with this code. As I own the phone outright paying full retail price and am not under an actual contract I am trying to have my device unlocked.

As the cellular provider sets the terms for unlocking, you will need to follow those terms.
When I brought my phone to them and upgraded, I purchased my current apple phone at full cost.. I am not actively under a service contract and so I am free to take my number and go elsewhere. They however are holding my phone hostage for 6 months and are refusing to provide any unlock info.
As stated, if you purchased the phone from Cricket, they set the terms for unlocking.
