Wifi Connection/Icon Disagreement

While the Wifi is connected in Settings (with a check), the small icon (top left) never appears. When opening up Safari or email, I receive a warning to turn on Wifi or cellular. Knowing that Wifi is connected, I select OK and can surf. Same message for opening email and can read and reply as though connected. My cellular data usage is running up and appears that the phone would prefer to use cellular vs wifi.

-------

Disable Cellular:

Going into Settings, set Cellular to "Off", by tapping it.

Verify if you have an IP Address:

As for, Wi-Fi, tap it to enable it, tap your SSID(the name of your network), and confirm if you have an IP Address. If no IP Address exists, then that means you are not connected.
