MacBook 16-inch Fan Noise

We are testing two new 16-inch MacBook's before doing a rollout across our organization. Under low loads (25% cpu utilization), fan noise will get annoyingly loud. We're not doing any GPU related and more routine work such as: using web applications, debugging web pages, Microsoft Teams conferencing (audio/video) with a handful of people, Photos downloading from iCloud, Mac Mail downloading a new mailbox from Exchange.

We DID NOT notice this on our 2015 MacBooks and this might prevent us from continuing the 16-inch MacBook rollout in our organization.

Interested to hear others experiences.

I talked to Apple support (again) and now they want a video of the machine so they can hear the fans running, I can't believe that a company that just announced that made 92 billions in revenue in the last quarter can't replicate this issue on their offices...

When I called support, the person told me, he is new in this job. The first thing he suggested was to remove the batteries???!!!!!

Enough with the excuses please. Drawing 20W off the GPU and blowing the fans hard at idle or low workload clearly is a defect. Especially considering reports that it's drawing 5W and quiet when connected to the 6K Pro Display XDR.

Holding off on purchase here until this is resolved or I can confirm a working set-up without excessive fan noise (using mine for music production).

Would be interested to know if anyone has tried with Dell PX2715Q.

Dear critics! It's very simple, the performance of the past MBP 15 differs only Radeon and they do not have this problem! And I don't think that new video chips that are built on the new microarchitecture have a lot of heat, on the contrary, the new microarchitecture should improve this parameter. Is connecting an external monitor so difficult that the cooling system goes crazy and increases its speed twice just because I stuck a wire with an external monitor!?!?!?!?!!?

Having the same issue with my base model 16 inch Macbook pro. Obviously the 20W power draw is not acceptable

My other 15 inches macbook pro dgpu draws only around 9w when connected to 2 hdmi 1080p external monitor.

Have to work in clamshell mode only.

Let's hope Apple can fix this with a driver update.

Very disappointed with such an expensive "pro" machine

Can you confirm that the machine only draws 5w when connected to the Pro Display? Because I also read in another forum that someone has the computer connected to an old Thunderbolt display and the machine works fine, if that's the case then it's definitely a bug that is causing all monitors that are not from Apple to cause this issue.

To everyone reading these postings:

If you have not reported your specific details and sought a solution from Apple Support, please do that as soon as possible. Unless/Until there are MANY formal reports of problems that are still unsolved, Apple (as a corporation) does not yet know that this is a serious problem. You can use the "Contact Support" link at the top of any forum page. Being selfish helps everyone.

They will want to see the problem happen in an All-Apple MacOS. You can accomplish this with a fresh Install OR by restarting in Safe Mode. Do not allow them to brush you off or send you on a days-long restore without a way to re-connect with them and follow up on your problem.

I'm using a 2K display connected over HDMI to USB-C Adapter in the office. GPU consumption is about 19w when the lid closed/opened. At home, I have a TB3 docking station CalDigit TS3+ and a 4K display connected to it over DisplayPort, now, after you message I checked the consumption again, and it was as before, about 18 watts, but I closed the lid and it dropped to 5w. Opened the lid again and it's back to 18. And I can reproduce, closing the lid drops to 5w, but if and only if my display is connected over TB3 docking station. Unfortunately, I don't have any TB3 display to try it without DisplayPort connection at the end and it's really interesting whether someone has the same behaviour or can confirm that TB3 connection always works correctly.

I can't confirm personally that it only draws 5w with the Pro Display, just seen it reported on another forum. Also saw re the old Thunderbolt display. But wasn't there someone else having problems with one of those too? IIRC there were also some with non-Apple monitors who were getting the low power draw with some combination of cable/resolution/refresh rate.

Also IIRC weren't there similar issues early on with the 560X cards, which did seem to get fixed? Something like there's a low power state which it should be in if only driving an external display without anything else graphics-intensive. So fingers crossed it's a glitch with the drivers that will get sorted.

So I can confirm the same behavior on 4K LG 27UD88 connected via usb-c cable - when in clamshell mode, Radeon draws around 7-8W od power - with lid opened it takes 20W no matter what I do (different resolution combinations, refresh rates, cables, other peripherals).

I still encourage everyone with this issue (basically everyone from what I have learned) to contact Apple support so they will be able to eventually fix the issue. In the meantime the MBP is at least usable without worrying about shortening its lifespan too much.
