MacBook 16-inch Fan Noise

We are testing two new 16-inch MacBook's before doing a rollout across our organization. Under low loads (25% cpu utilization), fan noise will get annoyingly loud. We're not doing any GPU related and more routine work such as: using web applications, debugging web pages, Microsoft Teams conferencing (audio/video) with a handful of people, Photos downloading from iCloud, Mac Mail downloading a new mailbox from Exchange.

We DID NOT notice this on our 2015 MacBooks and this might prevent us from continuing the 16-inch MacBook rollout in our organization.

Interested to hear others experiences.

Welcome on board!

i have the identical specs on my MacBook Pro same issue... 2 visits to the Apple store and they have suggested I update the drivers on my LG ULTRAWIDE 34” .

i did that and a fresh Catalina install and the problem still remains.

The problem I’m having is that purchased my monitor after the 14 day return period And then became aware of the issue.

are you past your 14 day return period?

Sure it remains. What should a monitor update change on the faulty AMD implementation of the macbook. Seems they dont even have a clue or why are they waisting your time with those suggestions?

I hope apple fixes this issue on their MBP 16, so i can buy my 4th model and stick with it. My MBP 2015 is a little bit slow compared to the new ones.

I just got a 16" MacBook Pro: 2.3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9, 32GB, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB. I have it connected to an Apple Cinema Display (older model) with a USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter. The power supply is connect to the adapter. I am planning on getting a new monitor very soon. Sometimes I have an external Thunderbolt 3 drive connected. I've hardly begun to use the computer but there have been occasions when the fans have been running at high speed, and the computer feels warmer than normal. I read some of the posts but am not as technical, so don't understand the situations as well. Is there an app besides Activity Monitor that can help me report what is happening, when the fans are noisy? Just now I had multiple applications open, but not working in Photoshop or Lightroom or doing anything intensive and the fans seemed extremely noisy. I closed the apps and the fans are now quit. I'm worried going forward about this. I had a late 2016 15 in. MacBook Pro, and it was never this noisy.

This is responding to the deleted questions. I couldn't respond for quite a while. I think I was put in timeout.

I bought mine in mid-November '19 and received it on November 18.

Mine does not feel hot to the touch unless I'm working it hard. Barely warm most of the time. I'm just looking at the temperatures since the fans barely run. But to the touch it's not very warm. I do wonder if there are background apps that are just varying between all of our computers.

What GPU/CPU do you have in yours? Have you used it while connected to external displays?

They really have no clue at all. The support guys are so friendly(scripted), but tottaly useless. I ve been ont he line with them for almost 2 months. Can you imagine i was talking with a senior support, its like my 5th call, and over 10 times contacted thru chat. After more than 30min chat she is asking me which computer i have, like she just fell from the moon. OMG this made me so angry, what a time wasters.

Someone reported here a month ago that his/her machine didn't pass thermal tests in the Apple Store while it was connected to an external display and the technical guys suggested a replacement or money back. I'm quite sure if one asks in the Apple Store to test with a display and the lid opened, it doesn't pass thermal tests. I tried to use my MBP 16 during live coding in my lectures, I connected it to the projector using HDMI and have had to code using the built-in keyboard and it was undoable as the whole keyboard as well as the touchbar were extremely hot. Now, I use it with an external display and an external keyboard, well, I can use it for programming, but if the issue is not fixed until the next term, when I have to give lectures again, I will bring it back.

I read this article and it pretty much sums up

The way my MacBook Pro 16 inch has been running?

With or without the monitor.?

https://medium.com/@azamsharp/why-i-returned-my-brand-new-macbook-16-449d8afe5748

It has its quiet phases then all of a sudden

When I download music , apps etc . Fans go wild and computer heats up .There also seems to be a high coil wine that reaches Very unhealthy frequencies that have caused me Ear fatigue.

Very excessive? Loud fans .

So my question is if this is normal ? how can anyone use the highly promoted ‘ pro mic ‘ on these 16 inch MacBook Pro’s?

fan noise basically makes it useless.

I’m out of luck ... I can’t get an exchange past my 14 day return period.

I’ve tried everything to work around the fan noise.

I feel so duped 😞 I hope there is some kind of official Apple Announcement regarding this issue.

I pray that it is just a software issue

its a very expensive loss for me.

ive been using Apple products since 1995

blue G3 . I’ve never experienced something like this before.

please Apple make this right !

Without any new information from Apple, we are on the verge of returning all our 16-inch MBPs. This has been going on for months without even acknowledgment, let alone a fix. After using eGPU's for the last couple months, we removed them to re-evaluate and make our final decisions. We were quickly reminded how loud and how hot these machines get. As some of you mentioned, WindowsServer definitely is one of the issues. We see constant CPU and GPU utilization with no applications running and GPU time in DAYS when machines have been running for just a few hours. With no applications running, we will often see fans running 4500 RPMs or higher, which can get pretty loud. It is a little unpredictable when fans hit max speed or when we get near 100 degrees Celsius with external monitors, etc.

This has been one of the most disappointing experiences we have had with Apple and we have done a TON of business with them over the years. If this next MacOS release doesn't resolve most of our issues, Apple computers will not be an option for us moving forward. There was a time the premium price on these laptops coincided with a premium product. I'm not sure that's the case anymore.

Mine is currently whining away, all I am doing is running a virtual machine. Connected to an external UHD monitor, turbo boost OFF, and the fan is sitting at 3300 rpms doing NOTHING. Annoying AF.

If 10.15.4 doesn't fix this, I am going to return this late, and if they won't accept it, I will get an attorney.

I sold my butterfly keyboard machine for a loss, I am not going it again. This is not acceptable for literally $3,900.

Hopefully, it means that the problem will be fixed soon for you.

I happened to go on to a training site today where I used my MacBook Pro with an external TV hooked up through HDMI. With the screen open and the HDMI connected through the adapter, it made absolutely no difference. The fans never ramped up at all. I was connected for nearly an hour and a half Giving a presentation.

I would say some more about my observations, but it would get removed.
