Why does Photos keep freezing?

Hi,

had a call with Apple support last week and got a tip form the rep that actually cured a lot of my Catalina + Photos problems.

This is what I did:

And this is what has gone away:

• Photos crashing frequently while using libraries (on the Mac and on external HDDs) with Beachball
• Extensions like Motif and similar apps could not access the Photos library

I have a similar problem with Photos 4.0 running under Mac OS Mojave 10.14.6. Can't change anything about an album - can't change an album name, drag a photo between albums, delete a photo, nothing - without the app freezing and pinwheeling. The only way out is to Force Quit Photos. I have rebuilt the Photos database several times and do not syn photos with iCloud.

In addition to freezing and pinwheeling when an attempt is made to change anything about an album, when I merely open Photos, poke around a little and then Quit normally (not a Force Quit), the app never actually quits and never releases its lock on my external drive containing the Photos library. Photos Agent, Photos, and com.apple.CloudPhotosConfiguration remain alive in the Activity Monitor. I just checked System Settings and found that the option to sync Shared Albums in iCloud was checked (from having accepted an invitation from someone to share an iCloud album). Unchecking that did not release the lock that Photos has on my external drive.

Hi, I'm having a problem with the Photos 5 freezing (beachball spins forever) under latest Catalina. I'm quite sure, that this only happens since the latest updates to Catalina.

I'm not sure but notice, that Photos seems to freeze mostly when I use a cursor key on my keyboard to navigate in an album.

Anyone having the same symptom?

Maybe I should add, that I have and use multiple libraries residing on the fusion drive of an 2017 27'' 5k iMac. I do also have a library sitting on an external disk, but haven't used it lately.

First Aid by "Disk Utility" showed no errors.

BTW, I should add that my Photos library is on an external SDD, formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
