AirPods Pro High Pitched Noise

When I push my AirPods Pro into my ears I hear a really high pitched noise, similar to the mosquito sound everyone used to play. Has anyone else experienced this? When they’re off it doesn’t happen, so I’m assuming it’s part of the noise cancellation.

iPhone 8, iOS 13

Same. Started with one ear. I got the screeching to stop by resetting but then it had a constant static - but only in transparency and noise cancelling mode. I called. Told them my guess was from sweat. I was told emphatically no, they are designed for the gym. I took them in. They replaced just the bad one at no cost. But, just yesterday, the other is screeching so I’ll need to go in again. FYI - They were nice at the store and had heard of similar issues. They had me reset, which didn’t work. Then replaced one without even listening for themselves. You have to wait 30 minutes in store for the new AirPods to sync while charging, which was annoying. And wow, that screeching is so loud it could damage ears. Worried this could become a big issue for Apple.

The extremely loud high pitch sound I think stems from a feedback loop error. Kind of like how microphones make the same noise when it picks up on the sound it’s amplifying. I would try playing your music lower, and maybe trying the different ear tips to ensure that the sound isn’t coming back out and into the mic. If you haven’t switched out the ear tips because the test said it was a good fit, try going to the included larger size.

Once I tried switching everything out, I haven’t had it happen again, but if you have and it still does it, then I would make a appointment to have them looked at.

Hey, I am not sure how exhaustive your experiment was and how many AirPods Pro’s you tested to verify your results but I reached out to Apple and I was able to constantly replicate the issue while I was on the call with them. I asked the advisor if the AirPods Pro’s are designed to emit a high pitch noise whenever they are adjusted and he said no. So I asked for a replacement.

Again I don’t know the extent of your experiment but my replacements are perfect. I tried everything I did with the old ones and couldn’t replicate the issue. They are just fine. So if you are having this issue reach out. Don’t let people tell you to live with it or it’s not a big deal. It was a huge deal for me. I was at the point of getting a refund. Reach out, get them replaced or repaired.

i did a little experimenting. this actually has nothing to do with the functionality of the airpods, so don't be alarmed. your airpods aren't on the verge of dying, it's a bit of a weird side effect. some people have pointed this out, but here's the exact explanation: chances are you heard this loud sound while having airpods in and laying down on them, and chances are also that you laid down on your right side. the pressure on the microphone and the eartip react, i'm not sure if this is intentional or a mechanical oversight, but this is the reason it happens. a few other users have mentioned this and i'll quote them below:

bennett166 says, "Don’t know if this had been answered yet but I’m pretty sure the noise happens when the AirPods are put under pressure and the noise is to help eject water"

gdcapo says, "It happened after a workout - right ear only. It had to be because of sweat. Same high pitched whistle. I went home pulled apart the Air Pods so they could dry out - for about 20 minutes - and that did the trick. This was the first time this has happened. Have owned them for about six months."

DFB77 says, "This happened to me when they got wet. In fact I put them thru the washing machine. So fairly severe. When they dried out it fixed itself up. I needed to use a hair dryer for a while but it worked."

a lot of people seem to find this issue while the airpods have been exposed to water / pressure in an enclosed space. if you'd like to test this you can take your right airpod and clutch it tightly in your hand, moving it slightly each time. eventually you'll hear a squeak. my final theory is that this is ANC reacting to a feedback loop, caused by water or pressure.

Samesies.

It was predominately the right ear but the left would occasionally do it as well. The right AirPod Pro would be so loud I would have to take it out, only to put it back in shortly after and have to do it again. A buzzing, haptic like vibration would also occur as well.

I went to an Apple store as they’re still under warranty and I also sprung for Apple Care but they’re all closed in my area due to Covid. So I called and Apple set up an appointment for me to drop them off at Best Buy. Best Buy ran a diagnostic and confirmed there were multiple issue present with both sound quality and charging degradation. Hopefully they get replaced and the replacement doesn’t crap out in under a year.

Seems like this is a pretty common occurrence. I expect better from Apple 😢

I see that this is an ongoing problem. I recently too, came upon the same problem in my left AirPod Pro. I thought maybe it was from listening to music too loud, or maybe water had transversed inside. But I never get it close to water and I only clean the AirPod cushions and not the AirPods themselves.

And being a musician, I always apply the credo K. I. S. S.

With that said, all I did was change the AirPod Pro cushions to another set. And Voila, the problem was corrected.

I am assuming that if there is not a tight air fit and there is any type of ambient noise getting into your ear canal. It causes feedback to either the right or left AirPod Pro.

I truly hope this solves your problem, it did for me.

(Possible Solution?)

Heyya I exercise quite frequently with my AirPods Pro and suffer this same issue. Had it replaced thrice with no luck. Just today I found out that by playing those speaker clearing high pitch noises (can be found on YouTube) on max volume the problem went away. Do note you’ll have to find something to cover the proximity sensor (maybe finger or lie it on a table sensor facing down) so that music plays (remove ear tips too). Also do just swap between noise cancellation and transparency mode to check if squeak noise is still there. I’m not sure whether it might work for all but it’s worth a shot. Cheers everybody and stay safe! :)

Apple finally replaced my right ear bud. This is actually a design/engineering problem. Some pointed out on Reddit that the black mesh on the ear bud may be protruding more that it should. This was in fact true for me. The mesh protrudes more on my right earbud compared to the left. As a result, whenever I try to adjust my right I’d hear a loud noice like a microphone brought close to a speaker.

I would contact Apple or take them to an apple store. If you mail them in, they will most likely be sent back to you because they may pass all the test unless the technicians wear the buds, which I doubt they do.

I had this happening in the right Airpod only. I did a factory reset by holding the button on the closed case w/both Airpods in it for 15 seconds and then unlocked my iPhone. This seems to have fixed it for now. Really weird issue. I've used them daily for the past 5 months w/o this issue. I noticed it when I tried connecting them to my MacBook Pro for the first time in a while. Hopefully the squeaky static sound doesn't return soon. Otherwise, I'll be taking them into the Apple store since I'm still under Apple Care.

i had this as well in my left airpod pro. i am putting this here for anyone that still has this issue. there is a little piece at the end of the rubber/silicon part of the replaceable part. i had to take it out to clean my airpod, and it got rid of the squeal all together. the only downside to this is the sound quality is very minorly worse, but barely noticeable. hope this helps anyone who still has this issue.

Same here, AirPods Pro. It is a microphone feedback noise, but yeah, it’s jarring, high-pitched, and it hurts my ears. Not specific to left or right, it depends on which one goes in first. I have started holding them in my fingers and disabling Active Noise Cancellation as this is the culprit. Now I’m all hesitant to put them in my ears because, again, it hurts so loud!
