Breathe App interrupted when covering watch face

After updating my Apple Watch S1 to OS6.1, I noticed when I start a breathe session and then place my hand over the face to turn the screen off, something I could do in previous OS versions, the breath app stops and interrupts the session. This is a very handy feature because I use my Breatge app to help me fall asleep and I do not want the light distraction. Has anyone else seeing this problem and located a fix?

Great job again, modewing. Since the problem is isolated to the Breathe application when using Cover to Mute, I'd like you to contact Apple Support.

Apple - Support - Product Selection — After selecting this link, type "application" in the Search topics field and choose "Application does not respond or quits unexpectedly". Then select how you'd like to start the conversation.

Have a great day!

Thanks for testing that for us, modewing. It's appreciated. Since you can’t use Cover to Mute while using the Breathe app, I have other steps for you to try.

Please test the issue after each pair of steps.

Make sure that both your iPhone and Apple Watch are up to date:

If your iPhone and Apple Watch are up-to-date, turn both devices off, then restart the iPhone first:

If the issue persists, unpair your Apple Watch from your iPhone, then set it up again:

Are you able to use Cover to Mute while using other applications or does it only happen using the Breathe app?

Get back to us when you can.

Cheers!

After following each of the steps you suggested, I have found that the Breathe app specifically is interrupted every time I try to use the cover to mute. In previous OS versions, covering the watch face would turn off the display but the app haptics continued to keep the Breathe app running for the duration selected. The new OS update has interfered with this feature and the Breathe app is no longer useful on my watch when I am in a setting that the display would be a distraction. This is the message I get on the app each time I try to cover the face (see photo).

Thanks for the additional steps to try. Both devices were up to date, so I proceeded to the second step of restarting both my phone and my Apple Watch. After doing so, I tested the Breathe App and tried cover to mute so the face would stop. I set the app for 5 minutes of breathing. It worked for approximately 3 breaths after I covered it, then it stopped (both having lit face & haptics) When I tried again, it immediately interrupted the all upon using the cover to mute, as I originally reported to be the problem. Upon re-entering the app, it gives a message of “Your breathe session was interrupted.” I am getting ready to try the third step, resetting the apple watch, to see if that fixes it. I will reply with the results.

As for your question if other apps continue to work with cover to mute, I tested it using the workout app since this is another app that I would want to run silently. It appears to work correctly, meaning that when I cover the face the display turns off but the app continues to run. When I tap the face again, the display comes back on and I can see the workout is still active (time counting, heart rate monitored).

Hi there, modewing.

I see that you're trying to use Cover to Mute while using the Breathe application on your Apple Watch. When you cover the watch screen the Breathe app stops responding, and I'm glad to help.

Change the audio and notification settings on your Apple Watch -- Make sure that Cover to Mute setting is on in the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. Scroll down to "Mute your Apple Watch" for the steps.

Let me know how that goes, and take care!

Jeremy, thanks for the reply, but this did not solve my issue/complaint. The issue is that when using the Breathe app at night, I would like to shut off the watch face (light) but still run the app. In previous OS versions, this was done by using the Cover to Mute (putting palm of hand on the face for just a moment) and the haptics of the app would continue the Breathe session without interruption. Now when I cover the face, it shuts off the app completely, so in order to use it I have to allow the watch face to stay lit which is obtrusive in a dark room. I checked to make sure the "cover to mute" is on and then tested the app as well as testing the app when "cover to mute" is turned off. Either way, the app stops when covering the watch face instead of just turning off the face/light. Do you have any further suggestions?
