If your MacBook Air won't update to El Capitan (Version 10.11.6) it probably means that Apple doesn't support your Air version because the hardware is too old. I have the same issue with my MacBook Pro Late 2008 and my Mac Mini Late 2009, they aren't supported past El Capitan and they won't update to Sierra.
