Spotlight disappeared

On iPad 121" (and on a friend's iPAD's 10,2) the search function seems nowhere to be found and certainly not when I open the screen on the extreme left, where I used to find the search box. I am not sure if this is a bug (one of the many talked about in iOS 13) or if the search system has changed. It seems OK on iPhone XI MAX (which also has iOS 13 but not on the pads.
