I would like to see an iPhone setting that will alert the user that they are using cellular data when WiFi may be available. Setting would assist those who are tied to data plans.

Do not turn Wi-Fi off, so iPhone will be connecting the known networks as soon as you are in range.
Also, there’s an option in Wi-Fi settings “Ask to Join”. Select “Ask” from the list.
Thank you for your input. I have two teenagers who don’t pay attention to the indicator. I have even found myself at home using my iPhone not realizing WiFi was turned off. An alert or banner would help notify the user of this situation. Of course the setting should be customizable to suit the users needs.
There's an indicator in a status bar what shows what you are using – Wi-Fi or Cellular.
My job requires me at times to turn off WiFi. I will experiment with the “Ask” “Notify” function however. Thank you.
