Is there a way to unlock an I pad from activation lock. My parents are elderly and my father has locked it with "find my I-pad". Also, they don't know when they purchased or the Apple ID or password. The Ipad is approx. 6-8 years old.

If locked with Find My iPad, you can unlock that by following these instructions.
If you activate Mark As Lost
The missing device is remotely locked. If you have Apple Pay set up on the device, it is disabled. A confirmation email is sent to the primary email address associated with your Apple ID. When you recover your device, you will need to unlock it with your passcode.
That refers to the screen passcode.
