Screen flicker with 2015 Retina Macbook pro Mojave, Catalina

Wife's macbook pro started flickering after using it a couple hours word processing/web surfing yesterday. It will flicker like a corrupted image horizontally across the screen. Starts as early as the log in screen. Worse if you are moving the cursor. Tried updating to Catalina to see if that would solve the issue, but it didn't. Doesn't happen in safe mode, doesn't happen if it is connect to a external monitor (TV via HDMI) so it sure seems to be a software issue but she hasn't installed anything that I'm aware of. Allowed the computer to cool down and still happens from a cold start. Tried the SMC and NVRAM "fixes" but neither have fixed the issue.


Personally I build/piece together my own PC's so finding it frustrating that the only option seems to be is to give it to apple to fix.

I see you've done some troubleshooting already, such as resetting the SMC and NVRAM, as well as checking the issue in safe mode. Since you're still having difficulty, the next recommendation I have to see if it persists in a new, test user: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support and macOS Recovery: About macOS Recovery - Apple Support.


If it does not occur in macOS Recovery, try reinstalling the macOS software: How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple Support.
