SMARTLib 6.25.22 PM.plugin

Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.6

iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011)

I am not experiencing any obvious computing issues but I have directory SMARTLib 6.25.22 PM.plugin in my trash and cannot remove it. I suspect this is an older version of SMARTLib.plugin that should have disappeared with an OS update at some time, but didn't.

I understand SmartLib.plugin is a part of the operating system and I have it in /System/Library/Extensions and I don't believe the one in the Trash is being used by the System.

The one in the Trash is SmartLib 6.25.22 PM.plugin, so it is not the same name.

Info on both is similar but, permissions are different: (I am Admin)

I've tried a couple of things to delete it, but until Permissions are changed, I can't.

So, Apple, while I am hesitant to do so, is it ok if I enable and login as Root to delete this directory?

Should I just use Root to temporarily change permissions so I can move it back to the Extensions?

I REALLY don't want to break the System but I'd also like to get this thing out of my Trash.

Yes. I have tried almost everything in both GUI and Terminal except activating Root and logging in as Root. (I also haven't tried Target mode)

The *root* of the problem is that only system has any permissions other than READ as shown by my screenshot. The directory cannot even be moved out of trash to the Desktop. Any attempt to do so will copy it, not move it. SUDO does not have the required access.

I reached out to Micromat as they worked with me on a SATSMARTLib issue. They didn't want to touch it as SMARTLib.plugin is used by the system. The fact that this directory has a variation of that name didn't seem to matter, to them..........though by my way of thinking, if the file name is not exact, the system will not use it. But I'm no programming tech.

Micromat suggested I ask Apple about removing the file.

So far, yours is the only response.

This directory got where it is via an update, somehow, since only System can move it.

I believe enabling Root and logging in as Root in Terminal (nuclear option) will permit the directory to be deleted, but before I go nuclear, I'd REALLY like for Apple to speak up and say I'm not going to break something I can't fix.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the reply.

I agree it must have been from an Update error and did end up using Target mode to remove the file.

SATSMARTLib.plugin is not the same as SMARTLib.plugin, so you do not have two, you have one of each.

Looking at your score, I'm sure you know this, but I'd like to not confuse any inexperienced users that see this.
