Have tried to update my software for MacOS Catalina. Have not been able to complete since it locks up early in the process and never finishes. Any ideas how to get around this problem?

If you are trying to upgrade from 10.12, then I suggest you backup your files, erase the drive, then install Catalina. After all is working properly, restore your files. Restore third-party software from original sources being sure the software is compatible. See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
