Airport Extreme dropping connection

Issue with client's Airport Extreme (one month old) needing to be rebooted 4-5 times daily. Clients lose internet connectivity - both wired and wireless - green light on router. Static IP assigned to router and manually entered. Installed in small office - less than 10 users - all Macintosh. Port forwarding on three ports for Daylite CRM. Firmware at 7.5.1, No guest network enabled.
Troubleshooting included:
Switched ISP from ADSL to Cable (completely different technology and modems)
Switched router out and replaced with identical router - reconfigured manually
Turned on interference robustness
Changed both wireless channels
Changed out power supply and put both modem and router on UPS

Even in bridge mode I have enabled the guest network, as well as the 5ghz band so that my MacBook Air shows PHY Mode: 802.11ac. What power features are you referring to? I logged into the Ubee Modem/Router, but was unable to find anywhere to place it in bridge mode. I researched the "how to bridge Ubee" on Google; it appears that I have to call Brighthouse tech support to have this done, as logging in (192.168.0.1) as "user" will not give me the permissions I need to do so.

I agree that placing the Airport Extreme in bridge mode is not what I want to do, but I cannot find any other way of keeping it from dropping the internet connection.

Update 7/9/14: I called Brighthouse Technical Support; while I could not access the Ubee modem to put it into Bridge mode, the technician was able to do this remotely. Once the Ubee modem/router was in bridge mode, I reset the Airport Extreme to factory setting, and then went through the process of setting up a new wireless network. No double nat messages, no problem; setup was a breeze. I have a very strong signal; download speeds of 67 mbs.

So far this seems to have been the problem all along; I now have full capabilities of the Airport Extreme. I will update in a couple of days to see if I have dropped the internet connection; however, the Brighthouse Technician seemed to think that this would definitely solve the problem.

A big thank you to Forcefour for the suggestion of placing the Ubee in bridge mode. I asked the Brighthouse tech why I couldn't do it myself; basically the answer was that Brighthouse wanted control of Ubee for any changes such as this.

Update: It has been 3 days, and no dropped internet connection. Apparently placing the Ubee modem/router (from Brighthouse) in Bridge Mode has solved the problem. With my Airport Extreme there are no Double Nat messages, a strong signal, excellent internet speeds, and not a single dropped internet connection! It appears the problem has been solved.

I am now experiencing disconnects after rock solid connections for almost a year. I have a 5th gen AEBS connected to an Actiontec DSL modem. Around the 4th of July we had a thunderstorm that effected my connection. TDS replaced the modem for me. I also bought another Actiontec modem on eBay. I can connect easily and reliably for about an hour. After that, the AEBS just stops working with the green light on. Apple replaced the unit 3 times now. TDS came out again and traced my line all the way back to the central box. TDS gave me another new modem. The problem remains.

Here is the odd thing. I also own and Airport Express (current gen). If I connect my AEX to the DSL modem, everything works without disconnects. It is completely reliable. If I use my AEBS as an extender to the AEX, it also works reliably. This just seems so backwards.

I have tried every suggestion in this thread. This is very frustrating as I have had such a good reliable system since October. I have quite a few 1st and 2nd gen express units that I use for whole house audio. I have a couple of more AEBS stations that I can use to extend my network and provide connections for my DIsh network receivers. I have disconnected all of these in an attempt to eliminate any device that may be causing the interruption. Nothing has made a difference.

I will continue to monitor this thread for any new suggestions.

I think we can agree here the case is one there is no faulty part; it is just that they don't work together.

If they worked together before then we must assume something changed.

For me I would like to believe the problem starts with a firmware update of AE.

It is possible then another update will eliminate the problem.

BTW, I tried one earlier firmware without much success. But there might be something else I didn't do properly to revert.

The trouble is that earlier Airport firmware cannot be downloaded anywhere so I am not free to try.

If anybody knows how to get them please help.

I seem to have the same problem as most people here. Something I am experiencing that I haven't seen anyone mention though, is that when my Wi-Fi drops, I can get it back online instantly by unlocking my iPhone 5s and launching any app that connects to the web (ie. Mail or Safari). I know it's super weird.

Here are the details of my current set up:

  • Modem Motorola SB6141
  • AirPort extreme, latest generation with latest firmware
  • Several iPhones and iPads
  • TimeWarnerCable San Diego
  • iPhone 5s running latest version of iOS

My weird story:

I believe my problems started happening back in September of last year, coincidentally, around the time I got my iPhone 5s. My internet connection would just drop randomly even though my computer was showing as being online. Thinking it was the old modem provided by TWC, and because TWC was going to start charging a monthly fee for modem rentals, I decided to buy a Motorola SB6141, which was recommended to me by a coworker.

Changing the modem didn't do anything. The problem still happened on a daily basis, for a couple minutes or so at a time.

A few months ago, I realized that when the internet goes down, if I unlock my iPhone 5s and go online (ie. by launching the Mail app), then the internet comes back instantly. And I mean "instantly." This is the weirdest part of my story. Note that only my iPhone 5s is able to "restart" the internet. No other iOS or Mac device in my house has this capability.

I had TWC technicians come to my house 3 times and they assure me everything is fine. Motorola supports assures me my modem runs perfectly well, according to their tests. My AirPort Extreme was restored recently. I even went as far as buying a different modem (an Arris, which I believe is Motorola), and a different router. Nothing worked, so I went back to my original setup and returned the new modem and router.

For a while, I turned off Wi-Fi in the settings on my iPhone, only relying on cellular data. Surprisingly, during that week, I had no internet problems. As soon as I turned Wi-Fi on again on my iPhone, problem came back. Weird, right?

If my iPhone 5s is able to kickstart the internet when it goes down, I figured it is probably the cause of my troubles. After a complete restore and set up as new of the device, the problem persisted. So I took it to Apple who exchanged the device. I set up this new iPhone 5s as new (not from backup), and the problem happened again. Again, I can restart the wi-fi when it goes down just by unlocking my iPhone and launching Safari or Mail app.

All this now leads me to believe this is a software problem, somewhere on my own device. I turned off automatic app updates, and background refreshes, which didn't make any difference. I tweaked my email settings (went from manual pull to push) without any success.

It seems that there is something on my iPhone that i causing my wi-fi problems. At this point, I feel like I have done everything I can think of.

Any advice or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Hi.

Are you suggesting that I put an ethernet cable between my AirPort Extreme and another router that I would use specifically for my iPhone? I guess I could do that. Of course I would lose ability to AirPlay to my Apple TV or receiver, but it's an option.

At the end of the day, this option would only confirm what I have pretty much already figured out. Now I just need to figure out what on my iPhone is causing this issue.

Very frustrating to say the least...

Thank you for your help!

Airplay doesn't work across subnets. That's true. There are solutions for that (not easy ones though).

Alternatively you could try using an access point (airport express in bridge mode or ubiquiti). They handle the wireless only. That would eliminate the problem is it is based on AE's poor handling of wireless (the router function is intact here) and they remain in the same subnet.
