Bought the APP recently and used them about 7-8 hours in total. Here is my current status.

Status Today:

  • Ears itchy and moist with swelling.
  • left Ear Canal Skin broken.
  • can hear Blood pumping in my left Ear.
  • Hearing generally muffled.
  • Tissue is worst where the Tips touched it.

General Facts:

  • used Sennheiser and Bose with Silicone for years, NO problems.
  • regular Apple Pods, NO problems.
  • IT Consultant and Diver with constant plastic/rubber/silicone/electronic device contact. NO problems in 20 years.
  • NO Allergies.

First Assumptions:

  • on closer inspection noticed strong chemical Stench coming from the Tips.
  • assuming chemical contamination.
  • primarily a material issue not a medical one as Silicone Allergies are extremely rare.

Seeking Confirmation:

  • called friend (Material Scientist).
  • due to smell she assumed Evaporation of (maybe) toxic compound.
  • speculated maybe Solvent or Plasticizer.
  • instructed me on doing a Smell Test for Evaporation.

Smell Test:

  • prepared four Ziploc Bags. (unused and aired-out, neutral smell).
  • detach Tips from the Pods and put each part in its own Ziploc Bag. Bags not too big and not too small.
  • let parts rest for two hours (longer is better) so whatever evaporates can accumulate in the Bags.
  • (prepared an extra fifth bag for the unused Small and Large Tips).
  • after two hours gently opened Bags one after the other and immediately but carefully Smell-Tested the Air inside. best to be in a well aired room and take generous breaks between the Tests so the nose can "recalibrate".
  • extra Test Bags with Bose/Sennheiser Tips.

Results:

  • Bag with the unused Small/Large Tips contained a shocking amount of chemical Stench!
  • very similar to Industrial Grade Solvent or and Acidic Cleaning Solution. Smell subsided quickly but still noticeable when in close proximity to nostrils.
  • Medium Tips no better, after three days of usage noticeable chemical Stench.
  • Pods themselves only very mild (but similar) chemical Stench which vanished very quickly.
  • immediately stopped using the Tips and now keep them in a Ziploc Bag.
  • Test Bags with Bose/Sennheiser FREE OF STENCH.

Conclusions:

  • there is some kind of highly toxic chemical compound evaporating from the APP Silicone Tips.
  • Tips are contaminating the Pods inside their charging case. Would explain why more sensitive users react to the whole Pod Assembly with reactions outside of the ear canal.
  • Primary Health Issues after using the APP are most likely NOT an Allergy/Infection but something similar to A CHEMICAL BURN! Ears are desperately trying to drain out out the toxic compound. Poisoned skin is drying out and dying. Infections are probably second in the chain since the skin is damaged and ready for bacterial invasion.
  • would explain the long healing process and why Antibiotics barely help.
  • GENTLY&REGULARLY CLEAN THE AFFECTED AREA WITH A Q-TIP SOAKED IN A SALINE SOLUTION TO WASH OUT THE TOXIC MOLECULES AS BEST AS POSSIBLE.
  • selling Millions of Pods with few complaints matters nothing since the reaction might only show in people sensitive to this specific compound.
  • if you lack sensitivity the compound used will STILL accumulate and might cause massive health problems long term.
  • DO NOT USE SMELLING SILICONE TIPS!
  • (checked long term APP owners. pre 2020 production batch seem to be mostly free of these issues as well as the Stench.)

What`s next:

  • Stored all the Tips airtight and leave the Pods themselves outside so they can air-out. Will do more Ziploc Smell Tests on the Pods to check on contamination.
  • IF Pods have no more noticeable chemical stench I will try third party Tips and run another Test. Results in the thread were mixed maybe due to Pod contamination.
  • Will clean affected areas with generous amounts of Saline Solution as mentioned. Two washes today already brought down Itching/Swelling considerably.
  • Will Chat with Apple Europe on Monday escalating the Issue.
  • Will contact local Labs and Universities for a proper chemical/material analysis. Essential to find out what is used in these Tips to cause such violent reactions.

I will update the post as it develops.

Yes me too, I had them since January 2020 and I am a light user yet in the past 2 months or so serious itching has started and at night I only wear my right pod to watch stuff in bed and my right ear started to leak and I wake up with dry flaky ear canal on that particular one every day now. I never had ear problems before this is not good because I do like my Airpod Pro's...

Apple should offer alternative tips

PHD4Life5051 and MaryannZ, Not every solution is a social media solution. People need to go to their website/support to start the process. You will have to talk to someone on a telephone and then send emails. It will be quite extensive, but when you are asking for more than $200 that is what it takes! Tweeting, really? almost makes me laugh, you need to get serious.

Exactly the same for me with the Powerbeats Pro (also and Apple product!).

I've been looking for an alternative pair of earphones as I get really sore inner ear and top of the ear where the arms loop around them. I was hoping that the Airpod Pros would be different, but it looks like I'd have the same issues with them. I did try purchasing Comply Comfort + earphone tips (they're made from a memory foam material) and they're okay but not great.

It would be good if Apple could offer earphone tips made from alternative materials - something for them to consider.

If you call and they take back your APP, they will reimburse you.. tho it would take a while to get the money back. They just dod refunded me. I think I kinda figure out the issue through my experience. I have purchased Jabra Elite 65t just to give it a try.. from there the frequency can be adjusted. I DID NOT have any drainage nor an itchy, burning sensation as well. The product was absolutely good but not the best. At least this product gave me a relief.. Also, I have notice that just by pulling that APP feels like it sucking out where the tips at.. so drainagecan be an issue.

This is just coming from my end and not an expert to any situation.. I hope this helps.

But, totally if you guys call the support and give them pictures that safety and medical issues has been provided they will jump into it and process the complaint.

Good Luck. btw, got my check and money back.. and took them 12weeks.. I guess due to Covid everyone is understaff.. but keep trying. :) Peace!

I had the same thing, and tried several times, but always the same problem : flow of transparent yellow fluid, itching and inflammation of the ear canal.

I am seriously considering suing Apple because they see how many people are complaining about the same problem but do not take any action to warn users, especially that in some people, an allergy can have dramatic consequences and death as an anaphylactic reaction.

I will ask for compensation and I will think twice before buying an Apple product.

I think I have it figured out. I bought different tips, non silicon and still had the pro lame. Last two days have been **** after wearing for thirty minutes. It has to be the noise cancelling frequency that some of us are sensitive to. Thankfully apple is refunding me! A quick cure is an esthetician’s probe that emit is electricity like in those lightning balls. When touched it feels warm, inserted into each ear canal for about three mintutes, swelling went down and it does kill bacteria as well. They use it for “breakouts” on the skin. Lucky my wife is a skin care specialist and she brought hers gone, works like a charm! Now to get rid of this dang crusty crap?

The noise cancelling frequency is just a sound wave, the same as the audio you're hearing when you're in transparency mode, just inverted. It can't hurt you. I do believe you though, that something about the Pros IS hurting you, and I also am happy and believe that you've found a good remedy in that probe.

I also just got done with my test of memory foam tips, same result. Heavy discharge within 24 hours, crusting, the works.

My only guesses at this point are 1) the case plastic contaminates the tips, possibly also contributing to that weird "blueberry" type smell that a lot of people are picking up on. Or 2) our ear canals are just on high alert after reactions to the stock silicone tips. I read some webMD type article that said ear canal chemistry can take a long time to go back to normal after infection/reaction.

I honestly don't think we'll ever know at this point. It's time for me to move on, maybe Bose's new ones that they just announced will work.

I sent mine back to Apple and they refunded me, I then started wearing my Bose over ear ones again with no problem.

This week I've been into Apple to purchase second generations of the previous version and I am happily using them with no issues so far.

I stopped wearing my pros back in April, I could only wear them for 30 mins then the reaction would start, but my first reaction didn't start straightway it was 6 months after I has purchased them.

As someone else suggested, I removed the silicone tip from the left AirPod Pro, cleaned it to remove any possible residue and wore it in my left ear for 45 minutes. So far, No reaction from it this time. It also fit & stayed in my ear better without the silicone tip. I can’t try this with the right AirPod pro yet as my outer right ear canal is still swollen & draining from wearing the AirPod with the silicone tip 3 days ago.
