when I click on Install Catalina, I always get the message "request to recovery server timed out". how can I install Catalina 10.15.1?? is there a link to get me around this problem? I currently am using Mojave.

It sounds like the network connection to Apple's servers is not sufficient to complete the download.
Try taking the MacBook to another network and see if you can download there.
This is an installation. I already downloaded the OS X. It just won't install. Do I need a good connection to Apple to install?
I advise to read here about all issues with Catalina. I propose not to install Catalina and wait until you are sure that you really want it.
How big is the download? The full download which doesn't need to contact Apple's servers, is about 8GB.
