Mouse keeps disappearing from the screen

My cursor has been disappearing from the screen for about a week now. I can still click things, and can see if it is hovered over something, but cannot see it. It often seems to be triggered by my switching windows, but not always. The only way I found to bring it back is to shut my laptop for a few seconds and then open it again. That seems to almost always work, however it is very annoying to have to do that repeatedly. When I searched online for how to fix it, some said to change the size of the cursor in settings. I tried this and it did not work. Pretty sure this all started right after my computer installed an update. Anyone know how to fix this?

Hi there, cowsa,

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities about your MacBook Air cursor. If I understand, you often can't see the cursor unless you have something highlighted or you close your MacBook lid and reopen it. I'm happy to help!

Based on what you've described I would recommend going through the following steps. Try them in order, testing between each:

  1. Quit any open apps: Quit apps on Mac - Apple Support then restart your Mac: How to turn your Mac on or off - Apple Support.
  2. Reset the NVRAM: Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac - Apple Support and SMC: How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support.
  3. See if the issue continues in safe mode: Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support.
  4. Check for the issue in a new, test user: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support.

Don't hesitate to respond back if you continue to have trouble!

Cheers.

cowsa - I (nor Apple) have yet to find a fix for this. However, in one of those articles, there is mention of a workaround that worked for me consistently - that is to act like (motion-wise) you are moving the mouse to the very top left of your screen (just make a large move with the mouse to the "10 o clock" position), and then click, and your mouse reappears up there in the corner. What is mind boggling is that this apparently has been going on for YEARS, and Apple can't figure out a solution???
