Macbook pro 16 2019 freezes randomly and restarts

I just bought a new macbook pro 16 inch 2019 that came with Catalina, I set it up as a new mac and installed some apps (Chrome) and started using it.

The problem is it always freezes at some points and I have to manually restart it by pressing the power button for a few seconds until it shuts down.

This might be just me, but I think this shouldn't happen on a laptop thats costs 2699€.

I updated it to the last version of Catalina and this didn't fix the problem.

I wanted to go back to Mojave, not an option I guess.

What is going on Apple?

Darn it ... took too long to post: reposting.

Interestingly I too have a Space Grey MacBook Pro that was "custom".

My specs are: i9 2.3ghz, 32gb Ram, 1TB storage, AMD 5500m 4gb

It took 4 days to troubleshoot but I believe I have a reproducible way to test the Intel 630 UHD GPU issues people are having.

  1. Download Geekbench 5 (I used version 5.1.0)
  2. Select "Later" when the dialog pops up about paying for it. You'll be testing in "Tryout Mode"
  3. Look the the left of the program and you'll select the "Compute" Benchmark
  4. Select Compute API: METAL (OpenCL doesn't error out but Metal does.)
  5. Select Computer Device: Intel UHD 630 Graphics
  6. Open the Console Log app BEFORE YOU run the GEEKBENCH 5 test
  7. Select "Errors and Faults" from the Console log app. It should be at the top.
  8. Start the GeekBench test.
  9. Watch all the red dots proliferate the Console Log app. Most of them will be IntelAccel errors. Many times you will likely see the internal GPU restarting as evidenced by the attached screenshot. Look for signalHardwareError in your logs.

Here is my video of the whole thing. https://youtu.be/Rxh3wATgPOA

During my 7 minute video I try to select the "About the Mac" it takes almost 3 minutes for the window to render while the test is running. You can see in the Activity Monitor in the video it showing as unresponsive.

I truly hope this helps folks - and I wish you all luck. I love Apple and their products. This is obviously something they need to admit and get ahead of because this is turning into something that appears to be a real issue.

My laptop is currently at Apple repair awaiting a logicboard (MLB).

Edited because I hit post too quickly.

Replying to my previous post (my mac reboots as soon as I reach the Catalina login screen).

I installed Windows 10 via bootcamp. No problems starting. No crashes when sleeping (closing the lid and re-opening).

All my thunderbolt3 ports work (at least as USB-c ports, I don't own any thunderbolt3 accessories).

I'm pretty sure this is a software issue. Rumor is it may be fixed in 10.15.5 https://mrmacintosh.com/10-15-4-update-wake-from-sleep-kernel-panic-in-16-mbpro-2019/

Update here, just upgraded to 10.15.5 Beta (19F94a) - panic PowerPlay Failed Resume IS NOT SOLVED. My plan is to wait for the final 10.15.5 release and go for a refund in case it'll still be there.

p.s. Shame on Apple. I've been using Macs (iMac, Mini, Air) for the 10 year and this is the first time I've switched to PRO model just to find out that it is an overpriced, untested piece of ... hardware.

I get my fixed Mac 16 yesterday, so far it works well for more than 12 hours, no more abnormal shutdown when awaking from sleep.

So my suggestion is if you are experiencing the same error:

1) GPU Panic .... PowerPlay Failed Resum

2) kernel: (AppleSMC) Previous shutdown cause: -20

don't waste your time to call Apple Support, they will tell you do a lots of test, such as Reset SMC, PRVM, reinstall, bilabial... It's no use at all. Just to Apple Genius Bar and they will change you the Logic Board. Then this problem has high possibility to be fixed.

I still can't 100% confirm the change of Logic Board will fix the problem. Because someone report replacing Logic Board didn't fix this problem. But it seems like it fixed my laptop. And when I get back my laptop, the MacOS version is 10.15.1 ! I don't want to upgrade to the latest 10.15.4 now, so I disabled the Auto Upgrade function immediately when I first login into the system. Because both the system version down to 10.15.1 and Logic Board was replaced, I am not sure which one resolved the problem.

I will continue to watch.

Yes, same here. 10.15.5 beta has finally pushed it over the edge for me. Worse than ever.

If Apple doesn’t resolve this, I am never buying another laptop from them - after 35 years of doing so. This has been ongoing for months now and way too many of us are impacted.

What is surprising is now useless Apple Care has been in this context. The rote script some of them follow after being clearly told what has already been tried is sadly reminiscent of a bad workplace movie. Even if you can get escalated to Executive Relations, as I have, they just defers to Apple Care and the cycle begins all over again.

Make sure you submit your data after a problem via the Feedback App, as that is what they look at.

I've been with Apple since the original 1984 Macintosh, and I still have it. Never have I been so disappointed of an Apple purchase. Normally when I spend $3K, $4K, I don't care cause I know the quality product I'm getting. But this garbage and LACK of assistance for something SO expensive- yeah cuz you don't see Apple folks coming in here trying to help, we're like on our own!! I got this Macbook Pro 16 (2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9, 64 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, MD Radeon Pro 5500M 8 GB, 8TB SSD) to replace my previous 2015 iMac for mobility convenience. Not only it cost me slightly double (almost a car) but it runs slower and has all these hardware issues. Plus some stupid mouse lag that slows everything, even youtube video playback lag... WTH!??!?!? -

I am SO mad with Apple. I had a High Sierra partition on my iMac to run legacy 32bit software I need which replacing would cost me thousands. Now I can't even load that partition onto this stupid thing - it just doesn't let me. I've gone down dozens of rabbit holes just to come out frustrated in search of another one. We complain here but only ones I see giving "options" are the guys looking to bring up their level. Just finding something in this discussion board is difficult!

I think I found the culprit for my random freezing. I used to experience random freezing at least once a day, even when im not doing anything. System is idle. In all of that instances, Viber is open and seems the first one to freeze.

Ever since uninstalled Viber, my machine has been super stable for 2 weeks now. No random freeze anymore.

Im not sure why this has fixed my issue, but this just goes to show that, at least for me, this is not hardware issue.

May 24, 2020 4:20 AM in response to mhil

Random freezing occurs without any third-party software. Because they are random, which can happen often, then they may not happen for several days. Prior to returning my device, I noticed that it could freeze when checking the hash of the huge file (but not every time).

But my stable laptop works properly under any load with any software.

mhil, have you upgraded to 10.15.5 beta 5?
