Macbook pro 16 2019 freezes randomly and restarts

I just bought a new macbook pro 16 inch 2019 that came with Catalina, I set it up as a new mac and installed some apps (Chrome) and started using it.

The problem is it always freezes at some points and I have to manually restart it by pressing the power button for a few seconds until it shuts down.

This might be just me, but I think this shouldn't happen on a laptop thats costs 2699€.

I updated it to the last version of Catalina and this didn't fix the problem.

I wanted to go back to Mojave, not an option I guess.

What is going on Apple?

Darn it ... took too long to post: reposting.

Interestingly I too have a Space Grey MacBook Pro that was "custom".

My specs are: i9 2.3ghz, 32gb Ram, 1TB storage, AMD 5500m 4gb

It took 4 days to troubleshoot but I believe I have a reproducible way to test the Intel 630 UHD GPU issues people are having.

  1. Download Geekbench 5 (I used version 5.1.0)
  2. Select "Later" when the dialog pops up about paying for it. You'll be testing in "Tryout Mode"
  3. Look the the left of the program and you'll select the "Compute" Benchmark
  4. Select Compute API: METAL (OpenCL doesn't error out but Metal does.)
  5. Select Computer Device: Intel UHD 630 Graphics
  6. Open the Console Log app BEFORE YOU run the GEEKBENCH 5 test
  7. Select "Errors and Faults" from the Console log app. It should be at the top.
  8. Start the GeekBench test.
  9. Watch all the red dots proliferate the Console Log app. Most of them will be IntelAccel errors. Many times you will likely see the internal GPU restarting as evidenced by the attached screenshot. Look for signalHardwareError in your logs.

Here is my video of the whole thing. https://youtu.be/Rxh3wATgPOA

During my 7 minute video I try to select the "About the Mac" it takes almost 3 minutes for the window to render while the test is running. You can see in the Activity Monitor in the video it showing as unresponsive.

I truly hope this helps folks - and I wish you all luck. I love Apple and their products. This is obviously something they need to admit and get ahead of because this is turning into something that appears to be a real issue.

My laptop is currently at Apple repair awaiting a logicboard (MLB).

Edited because I hit post too quickly.

You’re really not helping.

I design and build hardware for a living. It’s hard. Even with the best intentions, people screw it up.

I’m not blaming Apple for these issues - I’m blaming them for their indefensibly terrible handling of them.

Memory can be nondeterministic, but so can busses, and BGA solder joints, and mechanical stresses, and so on.

You're not helping here nor are you correct by suggesting you have such great knowledge and wisdom about systems that you know better than everyone else, nor that Apple couldn’t have handled this better.

It’s not the bugs and issues - it’s the QA and lame approach to resolving them.

On one hand, I was very disappointed that I had to take a pretty significant step back in terms of specs, and there are definitely some spit-and-polish type things about the Surface Book that I'm missing from the MacBook Pro, but on the other, I can actually use the thing as a computer, and now I can send my defective POS MBP in to be replaced without leaving myself without a computer (though it'll still be annoying not to be able to do iOS development without it)

There are a few things about the Surface Book that I wish Apple would steal. Once you have a touch screen, it just feels wrong going back to my MBP and not being able to use it. I know I could get an iPad Pro to do something similar, but I really want / need things that aren't possible on the iPad.

I can't get over how hot the MBP is just with Xcode, Mail, and Safari running. There is just no way that there isn't something seriously wrong with that machine. I can have Solidworks and Altium open in the Surface and it's nowhere near as hot as the MBP. The difference in battery life is also staggering. The MBP literally won't make it through the night without getting down to critically low charge or suspending/shutting down because it ran out of juice, yet the Surface barely loses charge overnight if I leave both unplugged.

It's also annoying that even when the Surface fan is on full, it's still so much quieter than the MBP's fans

Up to 10.5.5 w/ supplemental update and doing fine now. Ordered in mid-April 2020 (2.6GHz/2TB/32GB/5300M BTO) and had some kernel panics for a couple weeks that didn't match the errors given before in an earlier post, but it's been good since then.

I still don't know if a third-party app was causing conflicts, or if resetting the SMC solved it (had a scare when it didn't recognize power plugged into the rear-left port, but it was resolved with help from an Apple tech over the phone), but knock on wood, it's been solid.

Ever since upgrading to Catalina (now on 10.15.5) my MacBook Pro crashes and restarts, and/or freezes requiring a forced re-boot using the power button, several times a day. (Much worse than any experience on Windows XP) . There appears to be no fix available - not even 'on the horizon'. Apple really do appear to have lost their way since Steve Jobs. Running a business on Apple is such a time-waster. I am very, very seriously considering reverting to Microsoft.

Just stumbled upon this thread while trying to diagnose issues with my own 16" MBP. 2.6/I7 machine with 32GB of Ram. Purchased in November, arrived in December, but my corporate IT was not ready to support Catalina so it sat from January until May waiting and waiting -- but finally they were ready to support Catalina so we got it all set-up and I started using it at home over the past 2 weeks. Hallelujah, I have missed you Mac! But this morning I got a screen freeze, fans to 100%, and on reboot after login, black screen fans to 100% reboot. I was eventually able to boot into safe mode and have seen both PowerPlay issues in my logs. I called Apple and they're sending me a package to send this back for the logic board replacement. Meanwhile, after letting the machine sit for a few hours, it actually booted without issues. I assume I should just follow-through and send it for repair once the box arrives and that just because it is working now is no indication that it will continue to do so...

(Replying to myself, see my previous post for context, my 16" MBP was stuck in a reboot loop)

I managed to get the vendor I bought my 16" MBP to issue me a replacement machine with the exact same specs (base everything: i7, 16, 512, 5300). The replacement machine came with 10.15.4; I've since upgraded to 10.15.5 supplemental update. The replacement machine has had no issues at all for over a week now on both 10.15.4 and 10.15.5 unlike my first machine.

My faulty machine was manufactured on week 16 2020 at factory C0. My replacement machine was manufactured on week 20 2020 at factor C0.

As most of you in this thread can imagine, having a machine that you can trust to be stable is a completely different experience than one that can restart on you at any time. It's like having a huge weight lifted off your shoulders. I seriously feel your pain if you're stuck with a broken 16" MBP. The issues described in this thread are definitely hardware issues. I don't understand why Apple doesn't step up and offer completely new replacement devices to those affected by the hardware issues here. If I didn't get so lucky with my vendor (e.g. if I bought directly from Apple) I would have been screwed.

@NoahC

I’m sending mine in today! I reinstalled the OS to make support content it wasn’t the problem. Of course at first you’re like wow everything feels smoother ,but just running geekbench 5 on metal with the intel gpu targeted I get the same intelaccelerator prodding error in the console logs and the fan is back to go 100% definitely send it in. if you have to get a new mac it wont be to big of a deal to setup.
