Macbook pro 16 2019 freezes randomly and restarts

I just bought a new macbook pro 16 inch 2019 that came with Catalina, I set it up as a new mac and installed some apps (Chrome) and started using it.

The problem is it always freezes at some points and I have to manually restart it by pressing the power button for a few seconds until it shuts down.

This might be just me, but I think this shouldn't happen on a laptop thats costs 2699€.

I updated it to the last version of Catalina and this didn't fix the problem.

I wanted to go back to Mojave, not an option I guess.

What is going on Apple?

Darn it ... took too long to post: reposting.

Interestingly I too have a Space Grey MacBook Pro that was "custom".

My specs are: i9 2.3ghz, 32gb Ram, 1TB storage, AMD 5500m 4gb

It took 4 days to troubleshoot but I believe I have a reproducible way to test the Intel 630 UHD GPU issues people are having.

  1. Download Geekbench 5 (I used version 5.1.0)
  2. Select "Later" when the dialog pops up about paying for it. You'll be testing in "Tryout Mode"
  3. Look the the left of the program and you'll select the "Compute" Benchmark
  4. Select Compute API: METAL (OpenCL doesn't error out but Metal does.)
  5. Select Computer Device: Intel UHD 630 Graphics
  6. Open the Console Log app BEFORE YOU run the GEEKBENCH 5 test
  7. Select "Errors and Faults" from the Console log app. It should be at the top.
  8. Start the GeekBench test.
  9. Watch all the red dots proliferate the Console Log app. Most of them will be IntelAccel errors. Many times you will likely see the internal GPU restarting as evidenced by the attached screenshot. Look for signalHardwareError in your logs.

Here is my video of the whole thing. https://youtu.be/Rxh3wATgPOA

During my 7 minute video I try to select the "About the Mac" it takes almost 3 minutes for the window to render while the test is running. You can see in the Activity Monitor in the video it showing as unresponsive.

I truly hope this helps folks - and I wish you all luck. I love Apple and their products. This is obviously something they need to admit and get ahead of because this is turning into something that appears to be a real issue.

My laptop is currently at Apple repair awaiting a logicboard (MLB).

Edited because I hit post too quickly.

Found a bug: tested on two 16" MPP.

1. connect to an external monitor via HDMI

2, in display mode, chose "mirror display"

3, set the MBP monitor brightness to 0.

4, restart the computer

The computer will turn into a brick, and only the key combination "option+command+R+P" can wake it up.

Could you test it on yours and let us know if you have the same issue? FYI, both machines i tested on are 2899USD (the 2799 model with 100USD GPU upgrade to 8G)

Similar issue with my new macbook:

Apple 16" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, 9th-Gen 8-Core Intel i9 2.3GHz, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8GB, Silver, Late 2019

Connected to henge stone dock with 2 external monitors. It crashed every time it went to sleep for any extended amount of time. I returned it with 48 hours of receiving it. Experienced 4 crashes in that time. One that corrupted my mysql db. Now wondering if any of these new macbooks would be stable with my setup. Seems not. I'm sticking with my old 2016 mbp until I see some of these issues resolved.

I am trying to install a virtual machine on VMware Fusion. I just bought the new Mac almost $4,000. It keeps freezing and shutting down. The past 3-4 hours it has happened at least 4 times. Ridiculous. This is supposed to be a top notch machine. It has 32gb ram, 2tb, i9. What is going on Apple? Should I return this and get a new one. Or is it across all releases. Ugh.

I was lucky in that my late 2016 mbp 15” is still working great (even with the notorious keyboard, which isn’t that bad). I don’t know how one could tolerate several crashes a day along with the data corruption that can go with it. These machines are not ready for professional use. I’m disappointed but I’ll still keep looking to see if the issues are resolved. Won’t make another mbp purchase until these issues are fixed.

Add another MacBook Pro 16 (I9 2.4, 32GB, 1TB) to the list. Received last night. Froze twice after its first 4 hours of use (installing apps). Once again while I was sleeping. Typical Apple. For the past years, every Apple product always has something wrong. I miss Steve Jobs. If you f'd up...you got fired or humiliated. I have been the owner of this NEW $3500 MacBook for 16 hours, and here I am on Apple forum looking for anyone else having this problem. I was really hoping I was the only one, then it would confirm I should wipe/reinstall, or something. Unfortunately, I see it would be a waste of time to WIPE. HARDWARE PROBLEM!!!

Thanks Apple for showing me my NEW, INNOVATIVE, PREMIUM, MacBook Pro 16, with its New FIXED keyboard (that is truly the old keyboard from 2105), with the faster CPU, RAM and GPU (nothing Apple created), is truly no better than a $999 Windows PC laptop. Apple can only claim two changes they made....The Force Speakers (which also have a popping flaw), .6 inches larger screen (truly innovative)....And still you got it WRONG. I believe we can all agree, the QA Apple once had is GONE!

Bloomberg.com wrote a piece a few week back. "The MacBook Pro 16 inch, is a good upgrade for all the wrong reasons". We upgraded due to a flawed keyboard, faster CPUs and RAM and GPU that Windows PC users have had for over a year. Apple really knows how to play us.

So sad....

I still have my 2016 I was planning to sell next week. I guess I should hold onto it, incase this 16 inch needs to go back.

I am experiencing the same issue, it usually crash while using Lightroom, Capture One 20 or trying to connect to my NAS.

In the Activity Monitor I can see that Finder isn't responding and other process that seems to be related to update and save the window (apps) states is also stuck and the only solution is to force a shutdown using the power button.

This started happening with Catalina 10.15.2 update but even after installing the current beta of Catalina 10.15.3 the issue persist. I really hope this to be a software issue, I must have to say that Apple software quality have decreased drastically making its hardware unreliable.

I will limit my comment to this issue but have had experienced many others with my iOS devices also.

NOTE: We have a Mac mini and a MacBook Air running the same version of Catalina and never had any issue with those computers. The only thing that comes to my mind is that those computers only have the integrated graphic card.

I just bought a new Macbook Pro 16" base model yesterday and it's already frozen a few times, forcing me to do a hard reset. It's crazy because my 2013 Macbook Pro has been incredible for 6 years. Never had freezing issues until this year, 5+ years into its lifespan, as it struggled to run the newest operating systems. Very disappointing to have crashing issues on a $2,500 machine. I was hoping maybe I just got a defective machine, but after hearing so many people experiencing the same problem, I'm not entirely sure what to do. May have to consider the Dell XPS 15.

Similar but worse:

Apple 16" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, 9th-Gen 8-Core Intel i9 2.3GHz, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8GB, Space Grey, Late 2019

MacBook Pro desktop started freezing days after it was set up. Worse, put it to sleep and it'll overheat and even worse than that, shut it down and the battery is fully depleted the next morning.

This version of theMacBook Pro was supposed to be an improvement from the problems of the last generation yet all it's been is an extremely overpriced disaster.

Since my last post I have been testing a workaround by disabling the Automatic graphic switching feature so my MacBook is only using the AMD card and so far so good haven't had a single freeze since then. I have been coding and edited over 450 photos these days flawlessly as it should be.

If you would like to give it a try:

System Preferences > Energy Saver

And uncheck the Automatic graphics switching.

Good luck.

Hope Apple fix this issue as soon as possible, in the meanwhile I will keep my current config.

NOTE: This should be a temporary solution as it will drain your battery faster because the system will be always using the must powerful graphic card even for simple tasks.
