Macbook pro 16 2019 freezes randomly and restarts

I just bought a new macbook pro 16 inch 2019 that came with Catalina, I set it up as a new mac and installed some apps (Chrome) and started using it.

The problem is it always freezes at some points and I have to manually restart it by pressing the power button for a few seconds until it shuts down.

This might be just me, but I think this shouldn't happen on a laptop thats costs 2699€.

I updated it to the last version of Catalina and this didn't fix the problem.

I wanted to go back to Mojave, not an option I guess.

What is going on Apple?

Darn it ... took too long to post: reposting.

Interestingly I too have a Space Grey MacBook Pro that was "custom".

My specs are: i9 2.3ghz, 32gb Ram, 1TB storage, AMD 5500m 4gb

It took 4 days to troubleshoot but I believe I have a reproducible way to test the Intel 630 UHD GPU issues people are having.

  1. Download Geekbench 5 (I used version 5.1.0)
  2. Select "Later" when the dialog pops up about paying for it. You'll be testing in "Tryout Mode"
  3. Look the the left of the program and you'll select the "Compute" Benchmark
  4. Select Compute API: METAL (OpenCL doesn't error out but Metal does.)
  5. Select Computer Device: Intel UHD 630 Graphics
  6. Open the Console Log app BEFORE YOU run the GEEKBENCH 5 test
  7. Select "Errors and Faults" from the Console log app. It should be at the top.
  8. Start the GeekBench test.
  9. Watch all the red dots proliferate the Console Log app. Most of them will be IntelAccel errors. Many times you will likely see the internal GPU restarting as evidenced by the attached screenshot. Look for signalHardwareError in your logs.

Here is my video of the whole thing. https://youtu.be/Rxh3wATgPOA

During my 7 minute video I try to select the "About the Mac" it takes almost 3 minutes for the window to render while the test is running. You can see in the Activity Monitor in the video it showing as unresponsive.

I truly hope this helps folks - and I wish you all luck. I love Apple and their products. This is obviously something they need to admit and get ahead of because this is turning into something that appears to be a real issue.

My laptop is currently at Apple repair awaiting a logicboard (MLB).

Edited because I hit post too quickly.

I am facing the same issue. My MBP froze on the day one after 30 minutes of starting it! Now it freezes every 3-4 hours. It freezes when I connect it to a USB C - HDMI convertor and connect to a projector and also when I am using Chrome. Once I was in a GoToMeeting and it froze, however, I could continue talking and hearing the other speakers in the meeting for a few minutes (the screen was frozen) and then it automatically shut down. I usually hear a loud hissing sound when it shuts down automatically after a freeze. Freezing is taking place on battery and also when the charger is connected. I contacted apple support on chat I am suggested to use the computer in Safe mode for a few hours. I am now trying safe mode.

I think there is really an hardware pb with this issue.

I was facing it starting from the first hour, and at least 1 or 2 times a day. (complete freeze, touchbar and sound working, force restart mandatory)

After a few days, I have returned the computer and bought a new one.

No issue after a full day on the new one.

Only difference, i still haven't updated catalina (still on 10.15.1)

Here's my setup: 16" MPB connected via TB3 cable to the CalDigit TS3+ dock. Connected to the dock is a Samsung 28" UHD monitor connected via a DP-TB cable.

My Mac seems to be as stable as can be expected under normal use, but if it goes to sleep (automatically or manually), there's a high chance that it either will wake up with only the built-in display working (dock and external monitor not recognized), or the built-in display will show a garbled mess. Either way, once in this state, the only resolution is a reboot.

I have tried running with "Automatic graphics switching" both on or off, Safe Mode, etc.. Apple tech support has tried their best to troubleshoot the issue but I am convinced that this is a graphics driver issue and hope that 10.15.3 (or sooner) will help. Either way, I just try to keep my Mac from going to sleep unless I feel like doing a reboot.

I faced all these freezing problems. Did all the resets and installed the fresh OS after completely erasing the HDD. Problem still persists. Brought to the service centre and showed them that the computer freezes in 15 minutes of use. They told me that motherboard needs to be replaced. Since this is a new model NO parts are available!!!! Called customer care. They are looking into options.

Absolutely hopeless support from Apple. The service centre cannot even take MBP as they cannot register for repairs without the parts. Apple has launched products without any parts and support. They cannot even give a standby laptop. As per their SLA they will take 14 days to repair it. Why should I get my brand-new machine, which is giving problem from day-1, repaired? Why can't they replace immediately? Pathetic service for such a premium and expensive product. Have advised my office IT team to stop buying this model till the problems are addressed.

I have a friend who is also having the same issues. We decided to run the intel power gadget application and the test showed that the processor and components were overheating on high task load causing the freezing. Again, just as with the Mac mini, making the exhaust ports too small on more powerful board is a very poor design and will lead to a premature failure of the components.

I experienced the exact same thing, and was able to return my MBP 16 to Apple for a full refund. But I still need to buy a new MacBook! I just checked in with Apple support and they informed me that they do not have any information regarding a repair program or resolution to this issue - which they said they were unaware of. Has anyone else had an improved situation with their MBP 16 following either a replacement with a new machine, or a software update?

Similar Issue - New MB pro - 16 inch - 16GB - 2.3 8 core - Catalina 10.15.2 -

Screen freezes typically when using chrome while playing a video in the browser. Possibly other scenarios as well. Keyboard does not respond either. Only way is to hard reset manually using the power button. Frequency is couple of times a day since I bought this machine three weeks ago.

Apple - Are there any debug commands or log files which can point to what the problem is to help you diagnose this issue this is a critical issue which impacts basic functions? Is this a hardware or a software issue? Can we help you isolate this to get a patch? Please respond tech support will appreciate your help. This is impacting productivity

I'm running into the same problem. The whole computer just freezes, included touch pad feedback. It happens regularly in 3D applications, Spark AR Studio specifically. I thought it may have been a problem with the graphics card so I returned the computer for a new one, but still running into random crashes.

My last freeze was this evening. I was running Maya in the background with Chrome in the foreground, with probably a dozen tabs open - that's how I prefer to work and have never run into this issue on my older macbook pro (2013).

This is really disconcerting, when the OS freezes and I have to perform a hard shutdown. I lose my work and worry that it will eventually corrupt the OS.

Are there any solutions to this? Is Apple looking into it?

Jan 20, 2020 3:59 PM in response to m0unt41nman

So I stopped using Google Chrome this weekend, ran Firefox with a bunch of youtube videos, then playing a movie on VLC, having iMovie on the Background, and today ran Unity and I haven't had the problem for the last 1.5 days.

I also tried on battery and on power source, computer on a cushion so it'd get warmer more quickly and no pb so far.

I'm using Catalina 10.15.2.

Laptop is:

6-cores 2.6Ghz i7

512 GB

16 GB RAM

Radeon 8GB

Chrome: 79.0.3945.130

I'll try to use Chrome again see if the problem shows up and then update Catalina / Chrome. I'll keep you posted

When I ran Intel hardware monitor and hardware monitor pro on my friends MBP 16" we discovered that the thermal sensors on the mission critical areas of the board were all showing excessive heating just before the KP took place. In a few instances the sensors were showing 96c -98c. ( What happened to the fans Apple?) The Graphics card seems to be overheating and then throttling down. This sudden change in speed causes / seems to at least in our case to create the crash conditions. Can anyone else confirm this?
