MacBook Pro keeps crashing - need help

Hi everyone,

My MacBook Pro recently started to crash every now and then and I'm trying to figure out why. Would rather not have to buy a new one, so I hope someone can help me determine if it's something that's fixable.

Here's some information about my MacBook Pro:

MacBook Pro 15-inch, late 2011 (MacBookPro8,2)

2.2 GHz Intel Core i7

8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 (2x4GB banks)

AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB

Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB

I ran a hardware check (right after booting up) and it reported no problems.

The system (seemingly) randomly crashes every now and then. Below is a picture of what I see right when that happens (it also flickers a bit). After a while like this, it will eventually reboot.

I went to the console (/var/log) and checked the DiagnosticMessages section. At the time of the crash there seems to have been some issue with the graphics card if I'm interpreting this correctly?

Does anyone know what's going on?

Hello olympicnp,

Thanks for that info and for choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are having an issue with your Mac restarting unexpectedly. To help with this, please follow the relevant steps in this Apple resource, including making sure your Mac is fully up to date and testing in safe mode:

If your Mac restarted because of a problem

If you're still having this issue, you can make a backup of your personal data and put a fresh copy of macOS on your Mac using OS X Recovery mode, as that will overwrite these system files causing the issue.

Back up your files with Time Machine

How to reinstall macOS

Cheers!
