Mac and Windows file sharing?

We have a 2018 MacBook Pro running Mojave on the same home network as a Windows 10 PC, and would like to set up file sharing over the network. I've gotten to the point where they see each other, but can't see directories or files. I imagine there's some permissions issue(s) involved.

The info I've found online seems somewhat outdated for earlier versions of each OS. Is there a good, up-to-date checklist somewhere on how to do this?

Only SMB sharing is supported on recent versions of macOS which are using the APFS file system. If AFP sharing is enabled, then make sure to disable AFP on the Mac. Otherwise I believe network file sharing still works the same. Most operating systems are deprecating support for older versions of SMB due to security issues.
